How to Build Your Own Cricket Trap

!±8± How to Build Your Own Cricket Trap

When I was a kid, my father would choose a weekend for a catfishing trip to Lake Texoma, giving me ample notice to catch lots of trotline bait. The pond I liked to get bait from was full of black perch and bluegill from 3 inches to 3/4 pound each. They liked crickets. Lots of crickets.

It took me an hour after dark to chase and catch a dozen crickets to fish with the following morning. Then the perch ate them so fast that I ran out within a half-hour or so. I had to figure out a better way to supply myself with enough crickets to catch enough perch to run a 100 hook trotline at least four times. That takes a lot of perch and even more crickets.

I noticed that the crickets I needed were on the ground, dead, at the gas station on the corner every morning. They were piled up under the light that stayed on all night. Nowhere else were they so numerous.

That gave me a brainstorm. I went down to the grocer's and begged an orange crate from him. Don't laugh... oranges came in wooden crates in the mid 1950's. The slats failed to cover the entire box bottom, but it allowed air flow. I covered the box with window screen wire on the bottom and sides in order to keep the crickets from escaping. Then I made a tight-fitting frame covered with the same screen wire for a lid and hinged it to the box.

The box was half-filed with torn up lettuce leaves from the grocer and placed outside against the wall of the garage with the lid propped open. This was the trap.

The lure was a simple invention... an extension cord with a garage trouble light plugged in. The key was the red lightbulb. The red light was positioned so that the light fell on the lettuce bed in the box.

The crickets swarmed the red light at night, falling into the lettuce where they remained chomping merrily away all night. All I had to do was quietly remove the light and close the box lid at daybreak and I had thousands of crickets free of charge.

My live tank at the pond was filled on schedule and many church fish fries were supplied with fine catfish from that Lake Texoma trotline.

Decorating Ideas For Apartment Bedrooms - Part 1

!±8± Decorating Ideas For Apartment Bedrooms - Part 1

Light, airy, and modern, the apartment style features streamlined furnishings, well-planned storage and bold, bright accent colors - it's a look guaranteed to make the most of small bedrooms.

The fresh and functional approach to decorating looks fun in any bedroom, but is especially suited to small bedrooms like those in modern apartments. It's a cost-effective look that relies more on a lively imagination and a confident approach than on a generous budget.

The look draws from many varied sources, which is part of its charm. For example, you can combine office-style, high-tech lighting with Scandinavian-style pale wood furniture and ethnic woven rugs. The aim is to create a lively, comfortable space that's practical, well organized, and easy to keep orderly, but with a youthful sense of fun.

Fresh, pale, solid-toned walls are the starting point for the apartment bedroom. As well as creating a restful ambience, they provide an unobtrusive backdrop for colorful accessories. Inexpensive, simple furniture available from home-decorating stores suits the style's streamlined look. Many pieces come in flat-pack, self-assembly form - practical when negotiating apartment elevators and narrow stairways. Where possible, opt for dual-purpose bedroom furniture, such as a dressing or bedside table, which doubles as a desk, and perhaps a sofa bed - you can then enjoy the room during the day as well as at night.

Creating the Look

Walls and ceiling: The smaller the room, the more important it is to use a light-reflective color. White walls are a good starting point and leave your choice of accent colors wide open. Continuing the wall color over the ceiling, especially in an attic bedroom, creates a sense of smooth-flowing space.

Though subtle paint effects such as colorwashing or sponging are suitable, avoid highly contrasting effects and fiercely patterned wallpapers - these can make an already small space seem claustrophobic. Larger bedrooms can take bold, solid but still light-reflective colors, such as rich yellow.

Windows: Window treatments continue the pale background theme or introduce bright color. Use streamlined, solid-colored or striped blinds on their own or combined with simple curtains or drapery, in pale or bright tones and plain or patterned, to soften the look.

Combine shades with net or muslin curtains for daytime privacy and to hide an unattractive view. Venetian blinds, with their razor-sharp, ruler-straight lines, add to the look; their adjustable slats give privacy and shade with a minimum loss of light. Plantation-style louvered shutters are equally suitable and could repeat the theme of louvered fitted wardrobes. To block out any traffic noises, make or purchase heavy, interlined curtains.

Floors: For a sleek, minimalist effect, go for stripped and polished pine floorboards or woodstrip flooring. Add colorful rugs, with bold geometric or otherwise large-scale patterns, for visual interest and comfort, especially near the bed. For safety, put rugs on polished wood floors with non-slip underlays.

If your budget can take it, opt for wall-to-wall carpet for a softer, more comfortable finish underfoot. Choose a solid-toned, neutral-colored one which, like a solid-toned wall, creates a sense of space - especially in a small room. Carpets can be white or a more practical neutral such as beige or gray, perhaps with one or more scatter rugs as focal points. Pale, plain natural-fiber floor covering is a less expensive option, and looks especially attractive combined with unpainted wicker furniture.

Lighting: Choose lighting to suit the room's streamlined, functional feel. Discreet, wall-mounted torcheres give good overall lighting, and are supplemented with simple, elegant, or chunky bedside lamps or portable office-style lamps that you can move about the room as necessary.

The Importance Of A Good Bed Base

!±8± The Importance Of A Good Bed Base

Having the perfect mattress isn't entirely up to the mattress itself. When investing in a quality mattress, it is important to team it with a quality base in order to get the most out of it. Choosing the right bed base will make all the difference. Now, which one to choose? Here is a guide to help you navigate the bed base options on the market.

ENSEMBLE VS SLATS

Ensemble bases are usually sold with inner spring mattresses. They are upholstered boxes with springs inside and are usually very low to the ground. This inhibits the mattresses ability to ventilate and is known for providing the perfect environment for breeding dust mites.

Slat bases are made from a series of flexible timber slats, usually inside a metal frame. They can be adjustable or motorised and offer superior support and ventilation for a comfortable sleep. The adjustable slats can accommodate changing lifestyles whether you are a growing child or teenager, planning to get pregnant, or they can simply adapt with you as your bodies needs change through the life of the bed.

FLEXIBLE SLATS

Flexible

The flexibility of the timber slats allows them to absorb downward pressure and help the mattress contour around your shape for a personalised, supported sleep.

Minimises Pressure Points

Flexible slat bases are designed to alleviate back pressure and pain that is caused by sleep systems that are too firm or too soft.

Air Flow

The gaps between each slat and the nature of it being elevated off the floor, allows for ventilation around the mattress. This is important in maintaining a comfortable sleeping temperature.

Eliminates Dust mites

Choosing a slat base over an ensemble base means you are eliminating a large environment that dust mites and allergens inhabited, thereby reducing adverse reactions for those who suffer allergies.

Minimal Partner Disturbance

Flexible slat bases are designed with two sets of slats and a central support bar, the advantage of this is when two people share the bed, they are not sharing the same slats, they have their own set, and movements on one side will not carry through to the other side. This results in minimal partner disturbance through the night, and differs to many ensemble style bases where the springs or coils are connected and movements can reverberate through.

ADJUSTABLE SLATS

Customisable

Adjustable slats have the added benefit of rigidity adjusters which allow you to vary the tension over your back area independently of your partner. This feature is great when each partner has different preferences for firm or soft, or different requirements due to varying body weights.

Changing Lifestyles

The ability to adjust the tension of the slats makes these perfect for those with changing lifestyles. Whether it is for a woman who is planning to get pregnant, or there is simply the chance that through the course of owning the bed your weight may alter (if you plan on having the bed for 8-10 years this is a likely scenario for many) the slats can adjust to such changes in weight, height and required support. Adjustable support is also idea for growing children or teens, a 12 year old will require very different support when they are 17, although it is often the case that they will have the same bed throughout this period.

MOTORISED SLATS

Head & Feet Elevation

Motorised slats allow you to raise and lower you head and feet using a remote control. These bases are great for people who like to relax in bed while reading and watching TV in a comfortable position. They are also a great option for people who have health concerns and need to be elevated when sleeping or have to spend extended periods of time in bed. Motorised beds have largely been viewed as medical aids, the lifestyle and physical benefits they can bring to people of all ages means people are starting to view then in a new light.

Lifestyle Benefits: adjust the head or feet or both for comfortable reading in bed, working in bed, watching TV or movies and so on.

Health Benefits: sleeping with your head and feet raised is known to assist with circulation, reduce cramping (via improved circulation), and in some cases reduce snoring by opening up the nasal passage. A motorised bed is also extremely ideal if you are planning parenthood, throughout the pregnancy phase you may adjust the bed to your comfort, and during the nursing stage you can raise and lower the bed with ease.

How To Choose A Platform Bed

!±8± How To Choose A Platform Bed

Before you get swept up in the latest Asian furniture trend and pick up a platform bed, you can save yourself some money now and down the road by following these platform buying tips. Though everyone knows that furniture can vary dramatically in quality, few people know that not all platform beds work with all mattresses. In fact some platform beds even require additional box springs for support. So before you bring home a new platform bed make sure you follow these helpful tips and make the right selection.

The Slats Story Some platform beds come with slats or bars to support your mattress and some do not. If you own a memory foam mattress, which do to their squared profile look great when used with platform beds, be advised that some memory foam mattress warranties are void if placed directly on slats. Not to fear! Just lay down a thin layer of plywood or heavy duty cardboard to protect your memory foam mattress investment. If you own a inner spring mattress you may also want to check your mattress warranty or lay down the plywood or cardboard just to be safe. This process is easy and will guarantee maximum life for your mattress.

Some platform beds come with no slats or platform at all. These bed manufacturers save money on materials this way and force you to use an unattractive box spring instead. Box springs are not designed to support your weight without slats and will sag with time. Do not purchase a platform bed without slats or solid platform.

The Wood Story

Most platform beds are made from particle board or veneer. We have even seen platform beds made from heavy duty cardboard that is covered in veneer. These beds won't last much more than a few years and should be avoided. Make sure the platform bed you purchase is made from solid wood!

Another common trick in the platform bed business is to sell beds with a "mahogany stain" or "oak finish". This does not mean the bed is made from mahogany or oak, rather that the bed has a wood like coloring. So to ensure that you get what you pay for, be sure to call the retailer and make sure that the platform bed you purchase is made from solid wood.

The Construction Story

Everyone has experienced wobbly chairs, desks, dressers and beds. These flimsy furniture pieces are most likely wobbly because they are held together with nails. With every vibration nails become looser and can not be tightened. Furniture fastened with screws is sturdier while furniture constructed with mortise and tenon joinery are even studier still. Mortise and tenon construction is similar to Lego toys in that an extension of one piece fits into a corresponding hole in another. Platform beds that incorporate mortise and tenon joinery will last for decades!

Follow these tips and your guaranteed to make a quality platform bed purchase.
